The wheel track is wigging my brain out. Why is it so much wider than the truck? Whats with the extreme dished wheels? My first thought ran to wheels with data gathering tools behind the hubs, then it ran to the JL track width being greater than the JK and that this mule is based on the JK...then I though “why would they build a skinnier JK mule box?” Thoughts?
Also, It looks to be coil sprung in the rear...which should be interesting for payload capability, something the JK already lacks in a big way and something the coil sprung RAM 1500's aren’t really known for...
One this for sure...this is going to be a large vehicle.

I wonder if that bed is meant to have fender flares that aren’t installed on the mule.

The bed is from a ram and the rear of the cab looks like sheet metal from a extended cab or ram mega cab. Its probably a one off prototype before a jeep designed bed can be stamped together. My guess is the first prototype is to use off the shelf parts from the factory and see what is fits and what needs to be revised for preproduction.

While I can’t speak about those specific wheels - don’t production Jeeps have huge fender flares (which aren’t on this mule)?
I’m expecting this to be a Wrangler Unlimited with about 6-12" longer wheelbase. Payload of maybe 1500lbs, probably closer to 1200lbs. Maybe I’m wrong and it’ll be a real “truck”, but I'm thinking something closer to an Avalanche in actual proportions.

I don’t like the bed. It looks like someone just hodgepodged a modern chunky pickup bed onto it. Jeep beds should be tub-style, or at least have the appearance being single walled. They are also nuts if they don’t do a single cab.

Yeah, that’s likely, in which case...way to cave to style jeep when you could have made your bed a lot more useful.

The bed can’t be from a ram, it would be WAY wider, since the JK is only 74 inches and a RAM is between 80-81 inches wide.

Bed looks too small compared to the rest of the vehicle.
Honestly if I were Chrysler I’d find a way to get a solid front axle under a 1500 and give it a Jeep grill. Bam, Jeep truck. Most Jeep buyers are primarily interested in the brand anyway.

Heck, the whole thing will look silly with the top off in general.

Those wheels are so weird. It wouldn’t be data tracking though, it makes no sense to have it out there, and it looks like those mags are really load baring portions of the wheels. Maybe they’re trying a funky new hub? But why do that with a test mule platform?
So far, it looks like an awkward pickup truck. They’re really going to push the boundaries of Jeep loyalty.
EDIT : I see on the FP, somebody knows that they are indeed measurement bolt-ons to the wheels.

It looks like they just took a 5.5" box off a Ram and slapped it on. I sure hope that camouflaging is hiding a lot, because if it isn’t I think this is going to be an ugly truck.
In fact taking a closer look at it, this has to be a pretty crude prototype model. Look at how that rear wheel sits way forward in the wheel opening. I’m guessing this is simply a crew cab Jeep, with the rear end of the cab cut off, and a skinnied up Ram box thrown on the standard JK frame. I’ll reserve judgement until a more final form is spotted.

not a ram bed, or at least not one that’s off the production line, the JK is half a foot narrower than the ram and while the JL is supposed to get a bump in track width...its not going to be THAT much.

I can’t see any point in a vehicle with an open, 4-foot bed. And if I truly needed a 4WD vehicle, which is unlikely in the extreme, I would not think to look at Jeep. Though I

This is also the only way I’d ever buy a Jeep. If you’re going to get 10 mpg you might as well have a bed.

I think the proportions are just about right. Not too small that the bed isn’t useable and not too big that it’s the size of a full size truck. Most of the body work is probably a hodge-podge of whatever they had laying around so i doubt the lines are what the final product will look like

The bed looks too similar to not be part Ram. They probably wanted to save time instead of making new tooling for a prototype, and they had to get something on there for testing. I would bet the production model looks much different.

Jeep face, Ram ass, full sized length?
I’m hopeful for somethign good but pessimistic because of the above making no sense whatsoever. It’s not like there isn’t something people can already buy aftermarket that they can target and improve upon. If they give us a Jeep-faced Dakota the size of a Canyorado while using Ram parts, I will be disappoint.
I can live with the Tacoma/Canyon/Colorado size but would much rather something like
But hey, we’re not exactly representative of the greater market here.

Massive for off-road sure, but most people will never take this on more than a dirt road. It needs to be more use-able in everyday life than a hardcore off-roader (that’s what the JK Rubicon is for). As long as they make it look good and give it decent off road capability it will sell.
Also it may have as long a wheel base as a full size, but it will be narrower and shorter overall. That bed doesn’t hang out nearly as far as most full size trucks.

oh yeah, its not going to be any worse for dimensions than a tacoma, but but its not going to be a small tidy vehicle. I disagree with the off roading too, I think people will immediatly take these off road and modify them for extreme use. Yeah, there will be a large chunk of brand buyers, but the Jeep community has been clamoring for a Tacoma of their own for a long time, they are ACHING to get a Jeep with a bed for adventure driving.

Yes, obviously the Ram box is way too wide, I mentioned that maybe it was a skinnied up version, because it certainly looks like they just sliced some out of the center. I’m guessing the box was just something they had. It was close, this is just a mule...no need to make it absolutely correct. They’ll fix it in production.
With it being coil sprung, though, they’re probably going for more “Jeep with a box” than “Truck that can do Jeep things”. Especially since the RAM 1500's are coil sprung, and it definitely won’t be any more HD than that.

JL platform, not JK mule. Wheels are used for data recording, usually have “sticks” mounted from them that go up to the sensors mounted on the body. JK and JL are already coil sprung, so of course this will be.

My speculation is that it will be the same as the regular Wrangler from the front to the 2nd door, with the same tailgate, bumper, and tire carrier on the back.
So, it will pretty much look exactly like a Brute. Nothing really shocking there.
The big issue will be payload and towing, how high will that go?
HammerheadFistpunch
> nermal
07/20/2016 at 18:58 | 0 |
That’s the big questions. It HAS to be better than the wrangler...but how much are they willing to go? The trouble is that even with the D44, the RGAWR is only 3200 lbs (front 2775), so they can’t go nuts unless the wrangler truck weighs a lot less than the wrangler unlimited [not likely] or they’ve beefed up the axles. Not to mention giving up on flex and ride.
I talked to an engineer at Toyota about the pansy Tacoma payload ratings (1175 for the TRD quad short V6 Auto) and he told me that it was a deliberate choice to suite a user that has shown little preference for maxing out the payload or towing of a midsized in favor of comfort and flexibility. I suspect that the truck will need to be someplace between the Tacoma (1175) and the Canyorado (~1550 quad short z71 auto) which was clearly designed to be like a 3/8th ton truck in capacity.
I can tell you that Jeep NEEDS to do something to quell the complaints of poor towing and payload options from the crowds.
